The Jimmy Brown Centre, Silverstone:
The winning entry in a limited competition for the design of a new international press facility at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire. This was a fast track building project for a fast track. Originally commissioned in November 1987, it was completed in time for the British Grand Prix of July 1988. The project proceeded as a sequence of sub-contracts with Henry Cooper of Milton Keynes as Project Managers. The form was inspired by the Australian architecture of Glenn Murcutt. It was a challenging design to develop in terms of acoustic performance. The brief required a building where the press could work without excessive noise, but would offer clear views over the circuit, from a site over the existing pits. It was established from testing on site with driver Andy Wallace and the Leyton House March F1 team, that Grand Prix cars emit noise up to 120dBA! Published in the Architects Journal – 5th April 1989.
