Integrated Architectural Design:
The American architect Frank Lloyd Wright referred to this process as “organic design”. He used the phrase to refer to the integral relationship in good architecture between the parts and the whole, setting out the architect’s obligation to assure consistency throughout the project and at every level of detail.
Adrian Morrow considers that the Vitruvian concepts of Commodity Firmness and Delight still apply to contemporary architecture.
Commodity: Functionality. Does it work?
Firmness: Structural integrity/strength. Is it safe?
Delight: Aesthetic value. Is it beautiful?
Architecture should not only be beautiful, but also safe, fit for purpose, easy to maintain and a source of constant delight to its users.
